Training camp is a free agent.

For the second year in a row, concerns about COVID-19 and policies surrounding it have led the Buffalo Bills to cancel their planned training camp at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, NY. The Bills, in a statement Monday, announced that they will be holding their training camp at the team’s facilities in Orchard Park instead.

Buffalo’s statement mentioned that the team and the college had been in contact about the topic, and that the college had offered accommodations to try and support the Bills with the NFL’s COVID policies. However, the team writes, “due to the complexities of the NFL’s current COVID-19 health protocols in place, the team decided to stay in Orchard Park for a second consecutive summer.”

This announcement also includes the context that Buffalo’s training camp contract with St. John Fisher has now come to an end. The two parties didn’t negotiate any extensions during the pandemic, and the original contract, which has been in effect since 2000, was set to expire after 2021.

The Bills, who invested oodles of money in upgrading their team facilities in recent years, were one of a dwindling number of teams to travel for their training camp. In 2019, only nine NFL clubs held their practices at other facilities. The Bills only spent eight practices in Rochester, having chosen to visit Charlotte for joint practices with the Panthers.

With Buffalo Bills Training Camp heading into the unknown, it remains to be seen what the future may bring, and whether fans will be part of that equation.
