Draft week could feature the New York Jets’ long-awaited Aaron Rodgers trade

For weeks, there has been almost nothing of value to report about the trade discussions between the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers regarding quarterback Aaron Rodgers. But with draft week upon us, rumors are beginning to circulate – and they are on the promising side.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday afternoon that the Jets and Packers have “recently re-engaged” on trade talks surrounding Rodgers. Rapoport says nothing is imminent, but the two sides hope to reach a deal this week.

Rodgers announced his intention to play for the Jets on March 15. Following Rodgers’ announcement, once a few days went by and there was no apparent progress on a trade, it became clear that the draft would be the next hard deadline that could potentially prompt the facilitation of a deal. A trade must be completed before or during the draft if Green Bay wants compensation for Rodgers that can help them win games in the 2023 season.

It’s possible that New York and Green Bay complete the trade in the days ahead of the draft, or even at some point on Thursday prior to the start of the first round (8 p.m. ET).

The two teams could even drag the talks into Friday, which is when the second and third rounds will be held (starting at 7 p.m. ET). If the Jets do not plan on giving up a first-round pick in the trade, there will be no rush to complete the deal ahead of Friday night. Both teams could be waiting to see how the first round plays out before deciding how to structure the deal.

New York currently owns six selections in the 2023 draft: Nos. 13 (first round), 42 (second round), 43 (second round), 112 (fourth round), 143 (fifth round), and 207 (sixth round).
