Former Notre Dame and XFL star Jack Coan will get a shot with his hometown New York Jets

The New York Jets have shown interest in finding a developmental quarterback throughout the offseason. They brought in a number of Day 3 quarterbacks for visits pre-draft including Max Duggan, Aidan O’Connell, and Jake Haener. While they didn’t end up drafting a quarterback, their search has continued. XFL starter Jack Coan is the latest signal-caller to get his shot.

Coan, a native of Sayville, New York, and an alum of Sayville High School, once looked like a star in the making. During his junior season at Wisconsin, Coan completed 69.6% of his passes and threw 18 touchdown passes against 5 interceptions, while also rushing for four touchdowns. However, an injury during his senior season threw off his once-promising career.

Coan wound up finishing his college career at Notre Dame, where it was clear he wasn’t the same QB he was pre-injury. He had lost mobility, his accuracy was down, and his turnovers were up. As a result, he went undrafted.

Coan latched on with the Colts as an undrafted free agent but failed to break camp with the team. He only attempted 19 passes in the preseason.

He then chose to head to the XFL rather than sign on a practice squad. He started as the backup quarterback for Hines Ward’s San Antonio Brahmas before quickly taking the starting job from former Broncos first-round pick Paxton Lynch.

Coan struggled, throwing six touchdowns and six interceptions in seven games. He finished with 5.8 yards per pass attempt and only completed nine passes over 20 yards. The next-lowest mark by a quarterback with at least 200 attempts was 16 completions of 20 or more yards.

Coan now looks to redeem himself with the New York Jets. He’ll be joined by former Incarnate Word QB Lindsey Scott Jr. as the only two quarterbacks reportedly headed to the minicamp. Both will likely be given a chance to earn an invite to training camp, where they can fight for a spot on the practice squad.
