Zach Wilson shows up to New York Jets’ voluntary offseason program, gets some throws in

Some New York Jets fans are wondering what Zach Wilson has been up to, as the second overall pick from the 2021 NFL draft has remained mostly silent in the public eye since the conclusion of the 2022-23 NFL season.

Courtesy of photos from the New York Jets’ official website, we have confirmation that Wilson has reported to Florham Park for the Jets’ voluntary offseason program. In the photo below, Wilson can be seen throwing passes on the Jets’ practice field alongside the other two quarterbacks on the roster, Tim Boyle and Chris Streveler.

As the Aaron Rodgers trade discussions continue to drag on, the Jets are currently operating with Wilson, Boyle, and Streveler as the only three quarterbacks on the roster.

Despite his struggles in 2022, Wilson is still expected to be the team’s QB2 once Rodgers arrives, according to head coach Robert Saleh. The Jets have not appeared interested in adding a serious competitor to push Wilson for the backup quarterback spot.

New York did sign Boyle, formerly of the Bears, on April 6. However, Boyer’s one-year, $1.09 million deal only includes $75K guaranteed, which suggests the Jets hardly view him as a legitimate threat to Wilson.

Boyle was likely brought in for his familiarity with Nathaniel Hackett’s offense. Boyle spent two years playing under Hackett in Green Bay (2019-20). Until Rodgers arrives, Boyle’s experience running Hackett’s offense can be valuable in the Jets’ locker room.

Wilson is entering the third year of his rookie contract. He’s due for a cap hit of $9.59 million in 2023 and $11.18 million in 2024. New York will make a decision on his fifth-year option for the 2025 season after the 2023 season concludes.
